If you’re a homeowner living in Canada, we have some very exciting news.

The federal government has recently launched the Canada Greener Homes Grant – an initiative designed to combat climate change by helping homeowners finance energy-efficiency upgrades, solar installations, and battery storage solutions for their residential properties.

Under the program, you might be eligible for up to $5,600 in free money to make your own home more sustainable and eco-friendly.

The Canada Greener Homes Grant: An Overview

Buildings are responsible for nearly 20 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions throughout the country. And the government has just earmarked grant money to help homeowners green their properties, reduce their carbon footprints, and save money in the process.

More specifically, the Canada Greener Homes Grant includes 700,000 individual $5,000 grants dedicated to retrofitting existing homes with energy-efficiency improvements like insulation, rooftop solar systems, and even smart thermostats.

The program also provides up to $600 worth of EnerGuide evaluations to help homeowners identify and plan for their green retrofits. In addition, the Canada Greener Homes Grant also includes recruitment and training opportunities to increase the number of EnerGuide experts in anticipation of increased demand.

Who Is Eligible for the Canada Greener Homes Grant?

The program is technically open to all Canadian homeowners, emphasizing remote, underserved, or indigenous communities – many of which lack basic power infrastructure or reliable Internet access.

Funding covers a wide range of residential property types – from row houses to all-season cottages to permanently-moored floating homes. And in addition to conventional energy-efficiency upgrades – like upgrading HVAC units or replacing older furnaces – the program also provides free financing for:

  • Solar installations on single-family homes ($1,000 per kW)
  • Battery solutions connected to residential PV systems ($1,000)
  • Solar installations on multi-unit residential buildings ($1,000)

If you’ve been on the fence about going solar or adding on-site batteries, this program just made the decision much easier. The government is prepared to give you money – to help you save money (and the planet).

How to Apply for the Canada Greener Homes Grant

The Canadian government has outlined four easy-to-follow application steps.

Step 1: Learn about the Program

It’s recommended that you learn about the Canada Greener Homes Grant to understand what types of improvements qualify and whether your own home is suitable for green retrofits.

Step 2: Apply for an EnerGuide Evaluation

The next step involves booking an EnerGuide evaluation to analyze potential retrofitting options. At this stage, you may be asked to demonstrate ownership of the property in question. And you might also need to prove that the home serves as your primary residence.

Step 3: Complete Your Green Retrofit

During your EnerGuide evaluation, you’ll receive a list of approved retrofitting options specific to your home. Typical improvements include storm windows and doors, smart thermostats, home insulation, and air sealing – all of which are best done by certified professionals. To also qualify for solar PV installations, eco-friendly furnaces, and more intensive retrofits, the work must be completed by licensed and trained professionals.

All components used across these green improvements must be sourced domestically to be eligible for grant funding. This even applies to online purchases, which must be ordered from Canadian distributors.

Step 4: Apply for Reimbursement

Once done with your green improvements, you can then apply for reimbursement. This step involves a post-retrofit evaluation by EnerGuide to fully assess the scope of your energy-efficiency upgrades.

Just remember to keep copies of all receipts and documentation until April 1, 2028.
